On March 8, 2023, International Women’s Day was celebrated worldwide. Women marched in cities across the globe to protest violence against women, to demand freedom, equal wages, equal opportunities, and an end to gender discrimination as well as to express solidarity with oppressed women around the world.
We live in a digital world now. We have made unimaginable scientific and technological advancements. We sent astronauts to the moon, robotic vehicles to Mars, and space probes beyond our solar system. And on earth, we have abolished slavery and apartheid, controlled diseases, increased life expectancy, improved the standard of living, and so on. Why do women in this age have to take to the streets demanding freedom and equality?
UN Women – the United Nations entity for gender equality and women empowerment – has declared the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day as “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”. UN Women asserts that women and girls are underrepresented in the creation and use of technology and though they are less likely to use digital services, they are more likely to face online harassment and attacks.
A news report published in the Guardian on March 8, 2023, cited an analysis of 133 AI systems across the world that found over 44 % of AI systems demonstrate gender bias. So, instead of eliminating gender discrimination, technological advancement has rather introduced it into the domain of artificial intelligence which is expected to predominate the future world!
